Chemistry Placement

Placement into introductory or general chemistry courses is based on your prior background in chemistry, your intended major, and the results of your ALEKS Math Assessment.

Most science and engineering programs require CHEM 110 and/or CHEM 112. Some environmental or health-focused programs require CHEM 130, a one-semester college-level introductory chemistry course covering the fundamentals of general, organic, and biochemistry.

You will work with your adviser during NSO to determine appropriate placement in chemistry at Penn State. Additional evaluation may be done during the beginning of the semester. There is no placement test to determine what chemistry classes you will schedule.
